Dear Jerry:
You must be retired for her to file for benefits on your account unless you are over age 66. Since she is 5 years older than you, she will get a full 1/2 of your full benefit rate if you retire at age 62. Since you are not working, you should consider filing as soon as you reach age 62. You would get reduced but your wife would get a full unreduced spouses benefit since she will be over age 66 when you are 62.

There are no benefits available to you unless you are age 62.....HOWEVER, if you are disabled, you should file for disability and then your wife would be able to file on your account.......Carol

MAYBE I DIDN'T MAKE MYSELF CLEAR I'M RETIRED I TOOK EARLY RETIREMENT AT AGE 51

Support Replied ~ 07-31-2011 22:44:57

Dear Jerry:
You cannot be retired for Social Security Benefits until you are age 62.....Therefore, your wife cannot collect benefits from your account unless you are also receiving Social Security Benefits or over age 66. Everything I stated in the above response is true.
You should probably file at age 62 so she can start benefits also. .....Carol
