Beginning the Process of Finding a Retirement Community

Two possible reasons you are considering senior living:

    • A family member or friend has recommended that you consider retirement living and you are looking for information in order to understand your choices better.
    • Something has happened in your life causing you to consider moving to a retirement community, such as a medical condition.

I want to learn more about…

There are two main options when considering retirement living: Independent Living and Assisted Living

Independent Living:

Independent Living specifies a community where a resident lives life in largely the same way as they did when living outside of a retirement community, but some accommodations have been made for residents such as housekeeping, meal provision, and shopping. This creates a more manageable experience for individuals overburdened with more labor-intensive daily tasks. This type of community also provides more social interaction and events for residents, allowing for social engagement and community interaction.

Ask yourself:

    • Do you maintain your current level of activity, but released from making meals or housekeeping?
    • Do you feel alone or isolated?
    • Is maintaining your home too difficult?
    • Are your personal care needs being met?
    • Has independent living become more challenging?
    • Would you like assistance with tasks such as cooking or shopping?
    • Do you want greater access to social and recreational activities?
    • Do you want to live closer to others that are your age?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, please consider an independent living facility! Allow yourself a stress-free experience living near your peers while mundane tasks are taken care of for you. This freedom allows you to pursue your hobbies, make time to spend with friends and family, and reduces your daily stress.

Assisted Living:

Assisted living is the option you would consider if there are medical issues or problems with mobility that require an individual to need greater support to manage daily living. Assisted living communities are staffed with individuals who are able to provide medical support, in addition to assisting with daily tasks such as seeing to personal needs, meal preparation, medication dispersal, and housekeeping. This community also still provides community events to ensure residents have access to recreation and social interaction.

Understanding When a NH Retirement Community is Right for You:

There are various situations that may cause you to consider the advantages of relocating to a retirement community. Here are some circumstances that may urge you to contemplate such a move.

    • One spouse may require more extensive, long term care, but the other does not want to travel or live in a house alone. With a residential community, the spouse who remains independent can live in a community with their peers and their spouse, while being relieved of tasks such as meals and housekeeping.
    • You have an incident, perhaps an injury or acute illness, that makes you aware that daily household tasks have become burdensome. Living in a retirement community would relieve you of those responsibilities and provide immediate support for any emergency issues that may arise.
    • A family member or friend has just relocated to a retirement community and they share with you how much they enjoy it. They have a community to engage with, don’t have to worry about cooking or housework and have the comfort of knowing they are surrounded by helpful staff in case of any emergency.
    • You are in the early stages of a Alzheimers’ Disease or a related chronic illness and have to move into a specified care facility. In a retirement community, you are able to receive the appropriate therapies and live in an ideal environment created for those with your specific medical concern.

Trial Stays:

Many communities allow temporary or respite stays in order to fully experience life in a retirement community. This service is very specific to retirement communities, and allows a potential resident to get a true sense of how well each facility meets their needs. A guest can stay for as long as they feel they will need to determine a community’s fitness. During that time, a potential resident is able to gather as much information as they need.
