It's sunny today in the Berkshires - what a relief. The snow is actually beginning to melt. I've just come back in from walking (around the mud puddles and in a few) and it feels great. I love spring

1. Stretch your Hamstrings and Piriformis before and after you go out for your walk or run by sitting on the floor with your legs extended. Bend your left knee and bring it towards your chest, moving your foot to the top of your thigh. Then let the knee relax to the floor. If it doesn't go down to the floor, rest it on a blanket. Inhale deeply and you face your right leg and stretch yourself down over that leg. Breathe deeply for at least a minute and stretch. Inhale your body back up, extend the left leg back out and repeat with the right leg. This will help you to begin breathing better before your walk and also prevent tightening of the muscles that cause sciatica.


2. If you're going to do some gardening, complete stretch and flexion of the spine is a good way to begin. Start kneeling with your hands under your shoulders, knees under your hips. Inhale deeply as you slowly arch your spine, bringing your belly closer to the floor, then exhale slowly as you arch it up like a cat stretching. Start your movement each time with your tailbone so that you don't strain your neck. Continue for 1-2 minutes. Do this before you start your gardening project and then afterwards to avoid back pain from stooping over your plants or shoveling. Happy planting!


3. BBQ Grilling will be in full swing soon. Here's a healthy recipe that gives our bodies lots of nutrients and satisfies our taste buds at the same time.

Grilled Portobello Mushroom Caps with Chevre and Spinach

Marinate the mushroom caps in a little olive oil mixed with basil, garlic and onion for at least 2 hrs. Can be left in fridge overnight.

Grill on medium high heat for about 4 minutes on each side. Then turn them bottoms up and place the Chevre cheese and a few spinach leaves into the hollow. 

Turn the grill off, close the cover and in a few minutes you'll have some delicious melt in your mouth good food. You can use any cheese you like - Chevre is my fav.


Do you love movies with heart and soul?

There are plenty of wonderful movies being made these days - movies with thought-provoking, compassionate stories - but they almost never make their way to our local theater. Occasionally a film like "What the Bleep" breaks through, but for every one of these there are dozens of others that touch us just as deeply... if only we could find them.
