What You Need to Know about Nursing

Are you thinking of being a health care provider? Are you having doubts on which career path to take? Are you thinking of becoming a nurse but is too scared to face the challenges or is unsure of what to expect? Then this article is for you. I seek to emphasize the importance of a nurse's job in the patient's life and in giving health care services. I will also present some possible career options for those thinking of entering into the nursing profession.

Some people may think that nursing has only been a relevant career option recently because of the increasing demand for nurses due to the increased number of seniors, retirees and the aged. People tend to think that only the doctors have the crucial job in caring for the sick. Some look lowly at nurses for merely being 'aids' or 'helpers' of the doctor. What most people don't see is that nursing is a profession and not just a business. Nurses primarily give public service and not look for profit. They undergo very stressful days and perform procedures that oftentimes the doctors are too busy to do. Unlike the doctors, nurses have the duty of primarily giving attention and care to the patient, answering every call of distress or whimper. Nurses get to know their patients more personally than any doctor could. Nurses understand the patient's needs and alleviates their pain and discomfort accordingly. They are necessarily patient and compassionate as they cannot stay on the job for long if they lack these skills.

Having said these things, there are a number of requirements one must accomplish to be a registered nurse. Though each educational institution has their own different pre-requisites for admitting nursing students, it is generally required that one has a good SAT or ACT score. It is also required that the applicant has finished the basic subjects of science, math, English classes etc., and obtained a general weighted average of at least 2.0. Participation in relevant extra-curricular programs and activities are also desirable.

There are different levels one may choose from in being a registered nurse depending on the kind of work you want to pursue and the number of years you are prepared to study. To earn a diploma as a registered nurse, you have to study for at least three years. To earn an associate's degree you have to study for two years. If you want to enter administration you may want to enroll in a four-year Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Because of the increasing demand for nurses, many schools offer accelerated programs as well as night and weekend classes for those that are working. If you are already a registered nurse, online classes are also offered to earn your bachelor's degree in nursing.

Nursing and providing health care services is probably one of the most demanding and stressful job in the planet. It requires a lot of your time, understanding and sacrifice. But aside from these challenges, nursing is also one of the most noble and selfless profession there is. You not only get to help people, you also make a real difference in the world.
