In recent years, our country has experienced a great shortage of care-givers, nurses and certified nursing assistants (CNAs). This is partly because of the growing senior population that requires both short-term and long-term health services. Heavy and stressful work load, not to mention insufficient compensation, also contribute to the scarcity of direct health care providers. This is why a demand for CNAs, care-givers and nurses has increased over the years. Many are asking what one needs to do to become a CNA. Here is a summary of the basics on how to become a CNA.

Even before asking any of the technical requirements to be a CNA, one must first ask whether being a CNA is the job for you. Being a nursing assistant is not exactly the easiest job out there, especially when human lives are in the balance. To be effective as a nursing assistant, being efficient and competent is not enough. A lot will be demanded of you and you may even experience not only physical strain but also emotional challenges. To be an effective CNA, one needs to be patient and compassionate. In a high stress job such as being a nursing assistant, one must have grace under pressure and learn to work even in the face of stress. Self-confidence and cooperation and communication with others are also necessary to be successful in the job.

Other than these basic character requirements, training can be considered as one of the most important pre-requisites in being a nursing assistant. Though different states have varying requirements for the amount of training and time needed to study, here are a few options on how to get that training. Before you may train in any healthcare establishment, it is often necessary for you to submit an honest and complete background record of your criminal history. A drug test may also be required.

You may choose to train to be a nursing assistant in a healthcare establishment near you. Classes here may be offered for free or you may have the option of learning and studying and be paid for the work you do in the health facility. You may also try a community college in your vicinity or train with the Red Cross. In any of these options, it is almost always necessary for you to complete a specified time in working for the healthcare facility. After training you need to pass a state test that includes both clinical and written work. Remember to stay calm, especially during the clinical test. Respect the privacy of the patience, using appropriate tools such as gloves and observing proper hygiene in handling the patients. Remember that you are handling a human being. You must treat the patient with dignity befitting any person. Cover the patient up as much as possible when doing delicate procedures. Explain each step of the process that you are going to do. One shouldn't think that being a nursing assistant is just a job. It is a career aimed at helping others and giving the best care possible.
