I will be 66 May 2 2010. I work and make 43,000 per year. I would like to begin to collect SS in Jan. 2010. How will I do this and is there a penalty? Should I wait until May? Sincerely, Jean

Dear Jean: You should indeed start benefits for January instead of waiting. You might be reduced a small amount, but it would take years to make up the difference on the other end. You can file online by going to SSA.GOV. If you can, get your 09 earnings before you file so you can add them in when you do your application. You should load it on in January, or if you are unsure about filing yourself, call and make a telephone appointment for January. You can go into your local office, but sometimes the wait times are ridiculous. Good Luck.....Carol
