I am inquiring in regards to possibly getting widows benefits after my 1st husband passes. He and I have both remarried. I am presently not married and I would like to know if I can receive part of his Social Security after he dies. We were married for 13 years, and had 4 children.
Answer As an exwife, you can file for widows benefits when he passes. You have to have been married at least 10 years and at least 60 years old. You have the choice of staying on your own and switching to his at your full retirement age. Most times, that can bring a big advantage. Not knowing your rates, I cant tell, but when you talk to SS make sure they give you the different rates at different ages. Widows/widowers are the only ones that can leave the bigger benefit for later and take the lesser one now.
