Social Security Question:

surviving spouse benefits

Social Security Answer:

My husband and I are planning our future. He just retired at 56. His pesion is set up that when he receives SS then his pension is reduced. If something happens to him do I receive both a check for my SS and a check for his, or is it combined. My projected SS will be only $541 per month We just want to see if I will have enought to live on

Dear Susan:
Widow benefits start at age 60. You would be eligible for about 70% of your dec'd husbands full retirement amount.

I don't know how old you are, but if you are young, you still have time to work and accumulate a higher benefit rate.

Many couples are waiting until age 66 to take 1/2 their spouses and wait until age 70 to take their own benefit.

If your husband had a high paying job, and he is planning to take his SS retirement at age 62, then your widows benefits will be slightly affected.

One will always get their own SS first and add up to 1/2 of their spouses on top of that.
If you retire at age 62, then you would get the $541 and say $500 ( if your husbands age 66 amount is $2000) of his.
If he died, then you would get your $541 and about $1500 from his.
You would not get more than he was getting when he died........Carol
