Social Security Question:
Social Security Answer:
I am 70 and have been drawing SS since age 63; amount is 1486 per month.
My wife, age 64 has been working toward her 40 quarters for almost 10 years now; however, due to health problems she doesnt know if she can last to her normal retirement age of 66;
Can she collect SS off of my account now? If not, when can she start to collect.??
thank you for responding

Yes, she can collect off your account. Maybe it isn't worth her getting her 40 quarters if she is due more from you anyway. Find out what she is due from your account and then go from there.....Carol

1. How do we find out how much she can draw from my account?
2. She will be 65 on May 21, 2010...when will she be eligible for Medicare?
Does she need the 40 quarters on her own for Medicare? OR is she eligible at 64 for Medicare off my account?

Medicare starts at age 65 and she can go under your account for that.
To find out a wifes rate, You need to call your local office or the toll free number at 1-800-772-1213..SS takes your FRA amount and divides it in half. Then they reduce it down for her age. It gets reduced by the month, so call today and tell them she wants to apply for wifes' benefits now.........Carol
Don 't wait another month......

thank you so much for prompt reply.
have one more question:
query: If she takes Medicare B at 65, is that another deduction from her share or do we pay for B only once, a month, collectively, as a family?

No, unfortunately, Medicare B comes out of each ones check, so her wife's benefit will be reduced by the $96.30....Carol
