I will be 66 on 11/01/2010. My wife is 5 years older. I am going to start drawing my social security when I turn 66. Can she start drawing on my social security January of 2010, and if she does, will it effect the amount of mine when I start to draw in 11/01/2010? Thank you!

Dear Leonard: Call SS and see if you might be eligible for benefits before age 66. The amount allowable in the year you obtain fra is around $36000 and if your earnings are below that you should start earlier than age 66. Your wife will have to wait until you start receiving benefits to start her benefits under your account. The amount she gets off your account has no bearing on your amount......Carol
