I am 68 and have been receiving ss since '04 my ex-wife just told me my daughter (17 years old and her dependent) is eligible for benefits. Q. is she eligible even though she's not my dependent (i do pay child support). Would those benefits be retroactive back to '04 or start only when I file? Q. Can she receive them directly or as a minor must i have it in a trust account for her? thank you

Dear Arnold: Were you married when you filed for benefits in 2004? Were you paying her whole support (no c/s from her bio father)? I think stepchild benefits end when you divorced the mother..You should call the local office and find out immediately if these benefits are correct. The benefits can go to a minor age 17 if they are responsible enough to spend them correctly. You must have filed in 2004 if you have been getting benefits since then. Why do you pay CS if she is not your child? I dont understand what the situation is. Write back if you need to, but I think you should call your local office so they can check to see if these are being paid correctly. Carol
