Social Security Question:
Widow's benefit at 60 years old
Social Security Answer:
If you wish to collect widow's benefit at 60 yrs. old , how is it
calculated for the monies. Also if you collect then at 60 , can you
collect later at 67 for your own social security payment.

The widows amount is calculated using the deceased wage earners PIA. If your husband was receiving Disability before he died, then SS uses that amount and reduces it according to your age. At age 60 it is reduced a full 30%. It goes down by the month after that. And yes, you can switch to your own anytime after age 62.
I would call yearly to find out how much more yours is so that you know when your break even point is.....Carol
