Social Security Question:Which do I take Mine or Husband Social Security
Social Security Answer:
I am about to turn 62. My husband will be turning 65 and will continuing working and will not take his social security. Can I take half of his social security or do I have to take mine which is much less than half of his. Thank you

Dear Karen: For you to receive benefits from your husband, he needs to retire. You should file for your own if you are now 62 and not working.....Carol Your Comment ~ 04-10-2009 20:15:36
When he retires can I than get half of his?

Dear Karen: When your husband retires, you can file as a wife on his account if his full amount is more than double your full amount. You will take your own first and then add on his benefit so the benefit you get is not more than 1/2 what he gets. For example, if his full amount is $1800 and your full amount is $700, then SS takes the $1800 and divides it in half, $900 and takes from it your full amount $700. You would get approximately $200 or less added to your benefit amount. Reductions are used if you are under your full retirement age of 66. Carol Your Comment ~ 04-15-2009 11:03:04
If mine at age 62 is 600.00 and at 66 is 800.00.. But I decide to take my at 62. If his at full is 1800 and he takes his at full three years down the road. When he takes his will I get an increase. Karen

Dear Karen: Yes, you have $100 difference, so that will be the base amount. It will be reduced to whatever age you are when your husband retires. Carol
