Social Security Question:

Social Security Benefits

Social Security Answer:

My husband and and I are both retired and receiving social security. He is near the maximum and I am not.If I take a job paying 60,000 will it also increase my benefits as an individual .I am currently receiving benefits for my prior work life but it is only 1/2 of what he earns.

If he dies before I do I assume I will receive his current benefits as his widow and nothing of mine since his is higher.

Dear Leniklett:
SS benefits are computed using your highest 35 years. By working and making $60000 it will help your benefit rate but I don't know how much it will raise your amount. There are various rates that a widow can receive....It varies with the widows age....60-66.
If you are over age 66, then you will get pretty much what your husbands gets....His amount will be added to yours so you can keep your own SSN as your medicare number.
You don't state how old you are, but you could call the toll free number and ask them to do a comp using the $60000 as last years earnings to see how much it changes your benefit amount. Remember, if you earn the money your benefits will probably be suspended for a year, so make sure it is worth it. Also, if you get benefits as a spouse, those will be suspended by the earnings too. Good luck in whatever you choose to do....Carol

If I am over 66 then I assume the benefits would not be suspended

Hi,
If you are over full retirement age, then you will not lose any benefits.
It could only benefit your amount.....Carol
