Social Security Question:Is it possible to have duplicate Social Security Numbers?
Social Security Answer:
my name is sue smith(Name Changed by Admin) (Michigan) and there is another sue smith in another state (Indiana). when we both got married and got our new social security #s they were the same. we both were born in July of 1959, but we are not related. I got a new social security # two years ago, but i cannot co-sign for anything because the credit for the other sue miller still affects my credit even though I myself have very good credit. I need to know what to do to permanently separate my credit from hers. I have tried to contact other officials before but have been sent in circles. They keep telling me that it is not possible for me to have the same ss# as another person. I just don't know what to do anymore. please email me back or give me a phone # so I can contact you or someone else who can help me.
Answer You must contact SS and tell them that you and this Sue Smith have used the same ssn. SS can look up and see what earnings are posted under the SSN and see if there is another number combined with your number. Yes, it is possible for you to be issued the same number. SS must find out when and try to contact the other woman so SS can correct the earnings record. YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN CREDIT FOR YOUR EARNINGS. The problem with your credit has to do with the data base that runs the credit bureau. Call the places that you have credit cards with and make sure they know the problem and that they get the new number if you are given one. Dont let this go, go to SSA and get the name of the person that is handling your problem and check with them every week until the problem is resolved
