When I worked for SS you needed a cert birth cert to prove your age and citizenship. Some instances, you dont need one, but I would bring one anyway. Have your last pay stub, so we can input your earninga for 2008. Know your husbands ssn. Know your prior marriage dates, if you have them. Also, you can apply for benefits on the internet on SSA.GOV. It is a fairly short application. You will be able to see what you need because it will bring up issues if you answer yes to some questions. If you have trouble, just wrtie back to me. Otherwise, call the toll-free number and tell them you want to file for retirement, and they will have someone there that can help you immediately. You can do this anytime in January, Your first check will come for Feb in March. Unless your birthday is on the 1st or 2nd. Have your checking acct numbers available for direct deposit also.
