Social Security Question:

Social Security Answer:
I am 63 years old and have been informed by colleagues that even though I have earned far above 40 credits is other businesses, the fact that I now teach in the public school system of Mass. where Social Security is not paid, I will be penalized from receiving my Social Security BENEFITS if I teach for 9 years in this system. Apparently, I cannot receive my full Social Security benefits and a pension from the state of Mass. without penalty. Is this true??

This is called Windfall Offset. Since you worked for a pension not under SS, the computation for benefits is different. However, if you have 30 years of coverage under SS, there will be no offset. So....if you worked under Social Security for about 25 years , your offset would not be nearly as severe as someone who only worked 5 years under SS. There is a section on SSA.GOV on this that can explain it to more detail.
