My wife turned 62 in July and applied for SS and will receive it beginning August (around $500). I am 64 and will turn 65 in April, 2010. I'm considering beginning SS in January, 2010. I know retiring before full retirement age means less monthly. But will my collecting SS reduce my wife's SS of $500?

Dear J: Your wife's benefits are her own benefits and anything you do will not affect her own SS. If she files for wives benefits when you retire, then the amount that she gets from your ss record will be paid when your benefit is paid. Your wife's first check should come in Sept for August. When you do file, make sure SS asks about your wife. She could be due benefits if your amount is more than twice yours.....Carol
