Carol: I am 62 years old and earn over $100k, as a federal employee. My husband died 6 years ago at the age of 69. My full retirement benefit (at 66) in 2013,will be more than his full retirement would have been in 2013, had he survived. Am I eligible for any widow benefit, in addition to my full benefit, if it (my benefit) is more than his full benefit (under a spouse, survivor) on his record? thanks much, Patsy

Dear Patsy: There is an offset which is called GPO. It is a 2/3's offset of your federal retirement. You could be eligible if 2/3's is under his full amount. Also, if for some reason, you worked after your FRA and your earnings were no longer counted, you could collect widows. So, if you plan to work until you are 70 or so, you could collect widows for 4 years or so. Good Luck. Carol
