Recomps are supposed to be automatic. The Social Security Adm maintains that they are. I have been receiving retirement benefits since 2002 and have not had an automatic one yet. As a matter of fact, when I apply it usually takes about a year before I see an increase in my check. Can you shed any light on this problem?

Dear Lonnie:
First of all, you must be your own advocate. Recomps are done if the money you earn in later years is one of your best 35 years that SS used for your benefit rate.
SS can look at your record and tell if recomps have been done. If you send in a copy of your W2 with a statement at the bottom of the copy saying "I request a recomp of my benefit using my ____ earnings". Put in whatever yr. the w2 if for. As for you, I would call my local office and ask if recomps have been done on the past years that you have worked after you started collecting. If not, ask them to do them now.
You should receive a letter saying that they have done the recomp and you either
get an increase or not. Please call SS and ask......Carol
