Social Security Question:
I am desperately seeking your guidance in demystifying the process of applying for social security benefits.
Social Security Answer:
I am desperately seeking your guidance in demystifying the process of applying for social security benefits. I just reached 65 years of age last month in June and my husband who is retired (receiving a pension from city government) is 58 years of age. Would I be eligible to receive retirement benefits now or would I need to wait 4 more years until my husband reaches 62 years of age? Additionally, I was previously married in my 20's for 10 years to a gentleman who passed away a couple of years ago. Kindly advise what my options are (if any) and/or the best course of action to take based on my current situation.

You didn't mention if you were insured and had any Social Security benefits under your name.
It would make a difference if you were entitled to benefits since you could take a full 1/2 of your husbands primary insurance amount (age 66 amount) when he reaches 62, provided he files for benefits then and let your own benefit stay untouched until you are age 70. I know it is only 1 year from 69 to 70, but it might be worth the wait. If you are not insured, then you only have one option, and that is to have him retire at age 62 and then you will be eligible for wifes benefits under his account.
As for your first husband who is deceased, you would have to be unmarried to file for benefits under his account. SO, if anything happens to this marriage, either by death or divorce, you can file under the first husband if his amount is better than the one that you are receiving at the time of the change.
