Social Security Question:

I am 62 years old and am considering taking early retirement and collecting soc. sec. My questions is that I have a pension from IBM (retired) and will have one from the school district.

Social Security Answer:

I am 62 years old and am considering taking early retirement and collecting soc. sec. My questions is that I have a pension from IBM (retired) and will have one from the school district. When I take early retirement and collect soc sec at 62...does the income I get from the two pensions count against me - in other words does it reduce my soc sec income? I know if I went to work somewhere else, there would be a limit on how much I could make before it affect my soc sec; but does a pension as as earning income?

Dear Cheryl:
If these two pensions are both private pensions and you paid FICA taxes on the wages your earned, then there is no offset to the pension. Social Security considers only "earned income" for its limit. That is income that is reported to the IRS by a W2 or a Self Employment Tax Return. It does not consider another pension earned income.

You should, however, see if the school system you worked for took out FICA taxes because there could be a reduction in your benefit rate if they didn't. Let me know if, in fact, they didn't and I can tell you more about the WEP law......Good luck.....Carol
