Social Security Answer:

Hello,I keep getting different answers from the Social Security offices.I am planing to retire in june 2009 (mid year) and one official said my income will count against my Social Security for the whole year and if it exceeds 14,160 even though in june I will be going part time and will be making under $1000 for june thru december. I have had another tell me my income before the months I draw social security will not count and I should keep it under 1180 from june to december and what I made before that does not count because I am drawing it starting in mid year.I am going to be 62 in june.

Dear Charlie: The second answer that you received is correct. Social Security will not count the earnings that you made prior to your retirement month when you retir in the middle of the year. They can do this once in your life. As long as you stay under$1180 for every month you get a check, you will be fine. Dont forget to do an annual report the following Jan to show Social Security what months you stayed under that account. Carol
