Social Security Question:Ex Spouse and Social Security
Social Security Answer:
Dear Carol,
I was married to my ex-wife for 32 years, 1970-2003, durning that time I worked as a public school teacher CA. My ex-wife payed into SS for all thoes years. I will retire this year in July- 64 1/2. I re-married in 2006. I have only have 28 credits of 40 to qualify for medicare at 65.
Am I entitled/eligible for Social Security and/or Medicare benefits through my ex-wifes SS program?

Dear Cliff:
Since your wife is still alive and you remarried before age 60, then you are not entitled to any of your wifes SS. However, if she were to pass away and you were to divorce, then you could be eligible for some benefits from her.....There is a 2/3's offset which means 2/3's of what you get in your pension is counted dollar for dollar against your possible spouses benefit. Maybe you could be eligible from of your present wifes SS.
If she is over 62 and had a good paying job, it could be possible...Without numbers it is hard for me to determine for sure......Thanks for writing .....Carol
