I, age 60, was married for 17 years - no children; divorced 5 years ago; Remarried 4 yrs. ago. Ex-wife, age 61, remarried 3 years ago. When I die or simply retire, can Ex-wife file for part of my benefits? When I die, if ex-wife does receive benefits from my SS, does this effect what my current wife is entitled to? Please help. Thank you. Ian

Dear Ian: To receive ex-wife benefits (or widow benefits) one has to be unmarried or remarried after age 60. So your ex-wife cannot get benefits from you unless she divorces or loses her husband. Benefits to one spouse never affect another spouse. Ex-spouses are outside the Family Maximum. Boy, wouldn't that be a bone of contention......Carol
