I am about to turn 62. I am thinking about collecting when I turn 62. My husband is 73 and has been collecting full benefits since he was 66. If he passes before I am 66 and I am collecting what percentage of his would I get? If he passes after I am 66 what percentage would I get?

Dear Carol: Widows benefits start at age 60, so if he were to pass, you could file for widows benefits now. The amount of widows you would get at age 60 is approx. 70% of his benefit rate. At age 66 you would get his full rate. It goes down progressively from age 66 to age 60, so it would depend on how old you are as to what amt you would get. You also would have the option of going on as a widow first and changing to your own benefit later, if it is more than your widows amt. SS would talk this option over with you.......Carol
