I am 62 my wife is 51 our daughter is 8. The SS website seems to indicate that if I draw my social security now - my daughter will draw a benefit as a dependent child of a social security recipient and my wife can draw a benefit under the "Child in Care" provisions until our daughter reaches age 16 (http://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.18/handbook-1829.html). Question: do my wife and daughter both get a benefit and how do I calculate the benefit that each person would receive and the total benefit. Thank you

Dear Galand: Your daughter and your wife would get approximately half of what your benefit would be. If your wife works, she would be subject to the the 1 for 2 dollars offset of $14160.00. If you need further info. let me know and I will tell you exactly how your wives income will affect you......Thanks, carol Your Comment ~ 09-06-2009 09:57:54
Dear Carol, This is a great service you are offering, Thank you for your reply. Just a couple of followup questions please: My current benefit (at 62 YOA) would be about $1700 per month Would my wife get half of my benefit ($850) and my daughter get an additional half of my benefit ($850) for a total of a full benefit ($1700)? Or, would the total (wife benefit + daughter benefit) = one half on my benefit ($850)? My wife doesn't have income. Could you give me a reference to the social security act for this benefit? Thanks Gayland Your Comment ~ 09-06-2009 10:05:23
Oh Sorry one more thing I forgot to ask is how long does my wife get the benefit and how long does my daughter get the benefit?

Dear Gayland: Without getting too technical, your wife and daughter will get approximately 1/2 of yours each. There is a family max with all cases. You are entitled to all of yours and then each auxiliary shares the balance (Up to 1/2 of your rate). Your wife is eligible until your daughter is 16, Your daughter is eligible until she is 18 or out of HS-up to age 19 if she is a late graduate. Your wife's benefits would be reduced if she were to return to work and earn over $14160.00. Sorry, I don't know the SS act for this benefit. They are both auxiliary benefits, though.....Carol
