Benefits for child living with ex spouse

My husband will be receiving social security benefit soon, since he will be reaching retirement age. We plan to apply for benefits for his daughter who is not 18 as yet.

The child lives with his ex wife. We pay child support monthly. We would like the social security monthly benefit to be deposited in a Trust Fund for the child; which she can use later for college.

Can we do this?. Our fear is the social security benefit will be spent by the mother, and the child will not benefit from it.

Please advise.

thanks

Dear Lorita:
SS benefits for the child are to be used for her support. It would be best if your husband took the child support money and put that in a trust fund and let the money from SS support his child.......Carol

Some of this is confusing...and it seems when you ask someone at S.S. you get a different answer than the next person.
