Community Description

Welcome to Garden View Care Center at Dougherty Ferry

Garden View Care Center at Dougherty Ferry opened in southwest St. Louis County in 1999 and is the newest of our three private pay, locally owned care centers. Throughout the years, our one-hundred-twenty-bed Dougherty Ferry facility has become the first choice for many who seek assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, respite care or dementia care for themselves or family.

Our success is due to the fact that we offer resident-centered care in an attractive setting. We provide luxurious rooms and stylish, carpeted common areas that we refurbish regularly. Each day our residents have fun and enjoy life as they take part in a variety of interesting activities, amusements and outings.

We have always maintained a high staff-to-resident ratio. Many of the employees at Dougherty Ferry have been with us for over ten years. Our current administrator Genelle Gutmann joined our care team in 2001. Long-time employees who like what they do provide excellent care and service.

In recent years, we have adopted an activities based dementia care program, which has profoundly improved the lives of residents who suffer from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. At Dougherty Ferry we are in fact fully certified through the Alzheimer’s Association of St. Louis to train people who care for Alzheimer’s patients.

Additionally, we have created sections within our care centers where residents with similar care needs are grouped together. We have a wing, for instance, exclusively devoted to dementia and another devoted to assisted living and rehabilitation. This contributes to a calmer environment for residents.

Garden View Care Center in St. Louis County Living Options

At Garden View Care Center at Dougherty Ferry we offer a wide variety of care options including assisted living, respite care (short-term stays), skilled nursing care, dementia care, rehabilitative services, respite care and hospice care. Because we have all these options under one roof, an assisted living resident would not have to relocate if he or she should need skilled nursing care in the future.

We realize, however, that all our residents do not require the same level of assistance. Those who come to us for assisted living have very different needs from those with dementia. As such, our facility at Garden View Care Center at Dougherty Ferry is divided into care specific areas. Those residents with dementia have a dedicated wing with a specialized staff trained in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. We have another wing devoted to assisted living and rehabilitation.

One of our primary goals is to ensure our residents have fun. All residents take part in a wide array of daily activities and frequent outings. After all, people should enjoy life, whatever their age or health status.

Assisted Living in St. Louis County

Assisted Living is for adults who are relatively independent but need frequent medical attention or help with essential day-to-day tasks. The assisted living program at Garden View Care Center at Dougherty Ferry allows residents to maintain their independence in an attractive and comfortable setting while they receive the support they require.

Our caring and professional staff is on call twenty-four hours a day. If needed, they can help with bathing, grooming, dressing and laundry. Because we have a skilled nursing license, we can also administer medications. As a convenience for all of our residents, dentists, optometrists and podiatrists visit our care center regularly.

Our facilities at Dougherty Ferry are some of the best in St. Louis County. We have an ice cream parlor, a beauty salon and an elegant, full-service dining room. Every month, residents can take part in a number of in-house activities such as art lessons, dancing, card tournaments and karaoke. We also schedule regular trips for our residents to attractions around the St. Louis area. Past excursions include a historic tour of St. Louis and a trip to a local casino.

From day-to-day tasks to a day out on the town, the caregivers at Garden View Care Center at Dougherty Ferry focus on meeting all of our residents’ needs.

Dementia Care in St. Louis County

Dementia is a general term for a variety of brain disorders such as Alzheimer's that affect a person’s ability to remember, learn and communicate. In the early stages, a person afflicted with dementia may be able to live independently. As the disorder progresses, the ability to perform daily tasks dwindles.

Garden View Care Center at Dougherty Ferry offers comprehensive and caring Alzheimer’s and dementia care in St. Louis County. We provide our residents more than just a secure building. We have a separate wing devoted specifically to those with dementia, and we are fully certified through the Alzheimer’s Association of St. Louis to train people who care for Alzheimer’s patients.

Our activity based dementia care program runs seven days a week and helps residents stay healthy and be happy. Research has shown that regular, engaging activity slows the mental decline of those with dementia. Each day our dementia patients take part in a number of activities such as music, dance and arts and crafts. They also enjoy day trips to various metro area attractions.

If you have a loved one showing the signs of dementia, call for a tour or request an in-home evaluation to determine the proper level of care needed. You can also attend one of our Transitions meetings to learn more about dementia brought on by Alzheimer’s disease.

Our care center at Dougherty Ferry also has a number of well appointed lounges and outdoor spaces that encourage our residents to remain active and get out of their rooms. Walk around Garden View of Dougherty Ferry and you will see residents enjoying an ice cream sundae in the courtyard, playing cards and board games in one of the activity centers or having a private dinner with family in the Stan Musial room.

We are proud to offer one of the best activity programs of any facility in St. Louis County. Some of our day-to-day activities include exercise classes, movie matinees and charades. We also treat our residents to regular special events and outings such as live performances from musicians and trips to local casinos.
